A few tips for building a writer's portfolio

Written by: Staff Writer

The request "I'm just starting my writing career and I'd appreciate any ideas that could help me out." was posted to our community a while back and, with
our title "Landing Page Optimization for Dummies" having recently hit the shelves, I thought it I'd make it my focus this week.

I'd like to thank Mike Harwood for the following writer's tips:

Tip #1 - Offer to write for free. Certainly, when we set out to be writers, we didn’t think we would be doing it for free. Free writing is a great way to get your confidence up and get your name out there. However, just because we offer to write for free, editors will not be falling over themselves to accommodate us. Finding a free source to write for can be tricky as well.

Tip #2 - Enter yourself into writing contests. There are several reasons I encourage this, it keeps us writing and it can force us to broaden our writing styles. Furthermore, it gives you examples of your writing to include in your portfolio.

Tip #3 - Blogging is another great way to get experience, and samples. There are a number of places online with blogging for free or a low fee. When applying for freelance writing projects being able to direct them to your blog to view your style will help your name start to get known.

Tip #4 - Answer Questions at this site (JustMakeItEasy.com) to show off your talents, setup your profile area if you want to get work or send people to your site!

Don’t forget, the writer’s portfolio is a work in progress. It must be revised and updated often to keep it current. If you have any ideas or tried and true tips, share them below.
